An Americans poet |
Walt Whitman released the first version of his most famous book, Leaves of Grass in 1855. The first edition was small only containing 12 poems in the 98 page book. Whitman would have 6 more editions of the book published from 1855 to 1892. Each and every time a new version of his books would be released there would always be controversy surrounding the content of the poems. Many time publishers refused to print his book because of this. Many of Whitman's poems had to do with his own personal beliefs. In his poem "Song of Myself", he adds in the that he respects and accepts all religions and beliefs. In his other work's he creates his poetry through his experiences in and around America. Walt showed what America is and was and what it stands for through his poems. He is able to show what America and democracy is and what it means to America, and that it isn't controlled by one person but by everyone.
